PHILIPPIANS SUMMARY

Book of Philippians is a letter from Paul and Timothy to Christians in the city of Philippi. Philippians was among the last letters Paul penned, having written it from Roman custody sometime around 61 AD. Paul’s house arrest in Rome is recorded in Acts 28:14-31 and this appears to be the happenings in which the Philippians reached to help Paul. The Epistle is uniquely notable because of its portrayal of the humility of Jesus and where people were advised to be loving to each other, to agree and work together, being gentle, unselfish, and engaged in others.

The primary impulse for writing this letter to the church at Philippi was to thank them for the bountiful monetary gift they had sent to him while he was detained in Rome. The sound of this letter is more personal in character than any other letter. Paul draws his own beliefs and affirms that all believers must not be self-centered in their lives, but must look to Christ for an example of sacrifice and unity in purpose. He further compares enemies of the cross with those who are friends of Jesus and the cross. Mostly this letter is about joy. The noun joy is used four times while the verb, rejoice, is used eight times in this letter.
