Bible Miracles: Prophecies Regarding Nineveh

Nineveh god
Bible correctly and repeatedly foretells the future. Around 2600 years ago the city of Nineveh was the capital for the Assyrian Empire. Babylonians and its allies conquest of Nineveh in 612 BC caused an end to the Assyrian Empire. There are many fulfilled prophecies regarding Nineveh and its fall.

Nineveh to be destroyed

Nahum 3:19: Your injury has no healing. Your wound is severe. All who hear news of you Will clap their hands over you, For upon whom has not your wickedness passed continually? NKJV

Nahum 1:8-9: But with an overflowing flood He will make an utter end of its place, And darkness will pursue His enemies. What do you conspire against the Lord? He will make an utter end of it. Affliction will not rise up a second time. NKJV

Nineveh city Wall
Babylonians, Medes and  Scythians coalition in 612 BC conquered the fortified city of Nineveh.  Bible says that Nineveh was to be punished for the empire’s inhumane treatment of Israel.

The city of Nineveh and as a whole Assyrian empire never retrieved from the defeat. The Assyrian empire had conquered Babylon many years ago, but Babylon was able to recover from that defeat, regain its power, and defeated Assyria. But, as the Bible had accurately prophesied, Nineveh never recovered.

Drunk In Their Final Hours

Nahum 1:10: For while tangled like thorns, And while drunken like drunkards, They shall be devoured like stubble fully dried. NKJV

During the concluding hours of the attack on Nineveh, the Ninevites would be drunk. There is evidence that this prophecy was fulfilled. According to the ancient historian Diodorus Siculus, who lived in the First Century BC,: The Assyrian king gave much wine to his soldiers. Escapees and captives told this to the enemy, who attacked that night.

Destroyed By Fire

Nahum 3:15: There, the fire will devour you. The sword will cut you off; It will eat you up like a locust….  NKJV

Archaeologists uncovered the site during the 1800s and found a layer of ash covering the wrecks. According to the Encyclopaedia Britannica: “…Nineveh suffered a defeat from which it never recovered. Extensive traces of ash, signifying the sack of the city by Babylonians have been found in many parts of the Acropolis.

Ninevites would be wiped out

Nineveh Fort

Nahum 1:14: The LORD has given a command concerning you, Nineveh: “You will have no descendants to bear your name. I will destroy the images and idols that are in the temple of your gods. I will prepare your grave, for you are vile.” NIV

Nineveh’s fall and destruction in 612 BC registered a lasting end to the Assyrian Empire. The city itself never again raised to any meaningful importance. Nowadays Nineveh is an archaeological site in Iraq.
