MALACHI SUMMARY
Malachi means messenger of God. Malachi is the last book of the Old Testament covering events that occurred around 475-400 B.C. when Israel was becoming disillusioned about the prospects of renewed freedom and glory for the nation. Malachi would have prophesied sometime during the time Nehemiah was away or during his second term as governor. Israel began doubting that they would see such a restoration and complained that God was not following through on His promises. There are a series of discussions where the LORD states what He has done or said in the past, a series of disputations between Israel and God wherein God makes an accusation and Israel denies it. Then God goes on to illustrate how his statement or allegation is true and accurate. People and priests claim that they sacrifice, God points out they were bringing defective sacrifices. People lament that God does not pay attention to their prayers, but God says that they have broken the covenant with their wives and cheated them and that they have robbed him by not bringing their tithes and offerings. People claim that it is vain to obey God because of the evil flourish, God says that the Day of the LORD is coming and He will send the prophet Elijah before that day.
CHAPTER WISE SUMMARY:
Chapter#1: Priests—Get Back into Fellowship. Malachi complains of Israel’s unkindness. Priests were presenting inferior sacrifices. God said ”Where is my honor? You offer blind and lame sacrifices. My name will be great among the nations.
Chapter#2: Priest’s and People, Get Back into Fellowship. God Hates Faithlessness. Malachi reproves the priests for neglecting their covenant, marrying foreign wives, cheating with former wives and for taken other gods. Lord said Judah had profaned the sanctuary. I hate divorce.”
Chapter#3: Robbery, but Future Blessing. God’s true Messenger Is Coming. Lord said, “You have robbed me in tithes and offerings. The promise of blessing to them that fear God. The LORD will remember those who serve him.” The distinction between the righteous and the sinful.
Chapter#4: The Second Advent. God’s judgment on the wicked and his blessing on the good. Lord said The day is coming like a furnace. The sun of righteousness will rise. The coming of Elijah before Lord’s day.
