JOHN SUMMARY

The book of John was the last of the four to be written most probably in Ephesus. John’s gospel is the story of Jesus, the Messiah and the Son of God. John describes how Christ’s incarnation and death on the cross made God known and secured eternal life for all those who believe in him. Matthew, Mark, and Luke are usually referred to as the “synoptic gospels”. The word “synoptic” originates from two Greek words (syn, meaning “together”, and optic, meaning “seen”) that mean, “a view together, a combined view, a synopsis”. They share many associations in content, and character, and give a same chronological account of the Lord’s miracles, parables, and messages. John stands in distinction to them in that it does not follow such a strict sequential rendering of the Lord’s ministry. It carries no parables and only seven of the miracles that Jesus delivered. Moreover, it deals more with the conversations, discourses, and prayers of Jesus. It has been said that Matthew presents Jesus as King, Mark presents Jesus as Servant, Luke presents Jesus as the Son of Man, and John presents Jesus as the Son of God.
