GOSPEL OF LUKE KEY VERSES:

1:1-4: Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us, just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the word. Therefore, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, it seemed good also to me to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.

3:16: John answered them all, “I baptize you with water. But one more powerful than I will come, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.

23:33-34: When they came to the place called the Skull, there they crucified him, along with the criminals-one on his right, the other on his left. Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.

24:1-3: On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.

LUKE SUMMARY

Luke is unique of all the other Gospels in that it begins with a preamble explaining how it was written and to whom. Others Gospels had written accounts of Jesus life but this is a thoroughly investigated account written for a man named Theophilus, generally a title ascribed to high-ranking Roman officials. It is also unique in that it has a sequel. The opening verses of Acts make it clear that Acts is a continuation of the story started in Luke and written to the same man. It must have been written prior to Acts but after Mark’s Gospel. Act was written around 63 AD while Mark was written around 50-60AD thus 62AD would be a reasonable rough estimate for Luke. Luke was from Antioch, but traveled with Paul all over Southern Europe and the Middle East. The book of Luke gives us the most complete look at the life of Jesus. Luke uses eyewitnesses as sources for his writings. He stresses Jesus humanity, considering Luke was a doctor himself, and compassion as well as the power of the Holy Spirit and of prayer.
